Hey. Welcome. This is the journal of Todd Harris. I record random thoughts here, mostly about traveling. I collect tidbits and misadventures in the mountains of the Western United States on Toddot.net. I blog about genomics, bioinformatics, and science policy on my professional blog.

Shortness of breath: Dad's heart attack

August 31, 2002

I went to the mall today, specifically to look for a new scanner at the Apple Store. I walked around for a little bit. It was packed with people, truly a shopping frenzy (I guess there are buses that bring people in from the city).

I can’t say that I’ve ever had a panic attack before. I don’t really like shopping malls anyway so maybe that had something to do with it, but I just started feeling extremely closed in and out of breath. All these people swirling around. I beat it straightaway out of there in time to watch a big storm break over the monolithic parking lot.

When I got home, I got a call from my sister. My dad’s in the hospital. They think he had a heart attack. I can’t believe it. My dad? He’s my rock. I was just thinking the other day how sad I feel that I never see my fam. Now this. It was my mom’s birthday yesterday and I was chatting with my Dad on the phone a bit. He kept asking me when I was coming home. I’m catching a flight tonight from JFK. Hold on buddy, I’ll be there soon.

I was thinking you could help me with something.

I saw this book about panic attacks on this site http://tips-to-prevent-panic-attacks.com

is it worth buying?
